UTMB Health is the oldest teaching hospital west of the Mississippi. Established in 1891, UTMB has grown to a modern health science center with more than 70 buildings. The 84-acre campus includes four schools, a network of hospitals and clinics, and numerous research facilities. INNERFACE has partnered with UTMB for all signage and wayfinding since 1996. Hurricane Ike nearly closed the campus in 2008. Work is now being completed to change all ground level spaces into concourse and passageway use, including a new 12 story state-of-the-art medical center, the Jennie Sealy Hospital.
INNERFACE has replaced outdoor campus signs with a high-tech element. Now the signs can give pedestrians a digital map to take with them.
“Adding QR codes to our pedestrian wayfinding signage provides another option to assist pedestrians in finding their destination on campus,” said Bob Brown, program director for UTMB’s facilities planning. “With a QR code and smartphone, more wayfinding information is available on each sign than would be possible without this technology.”
Here’s how it works: A pedestrian with a smartphone scans a coded sticker on one of the signs. The sticker looks like a bar code and it is next to the name of a building or other destination listed on the sign. With the optical scan, the smartphone gathers embedded data, contacts a web server on campus, and retrieves a map. The map says “You Are Here” and shows a dotted line to the destination.
The signs are using QR, or “quick response,” code, which is similar to bar coding and displays the familiar matrix of black and white squares and rectangles. Pedestrian signs may have several stickers, each to a different destination. There are a total of 67 destinations with individual QR pointers.
A complete campus interior and exterior replacement program has been completed for their Galveston and Angleton sites. A new campus in League City is opening in June, with all new signs by INNERFACE. Over 30 clinics and freestanding care facilities have opened in the past 3 years, and INNERFACE has supplied all signs for their opening. INNERFACE remains a partner in the growth and quality of care that UTMB Health delivers to Texas.
